What do they do?

An understanding of international relations is vital for any career with links abroad. This knowledge can be acquires through various subject areas: economics, geopolitics, management, trade, marketing, law and the like.

Jobs for which an understanding of international relations is required can be found in the private sector, local or regional authorities and international organizations. An expertise in international relations can provide a valuable gateway into the public sector. It is often complemented by training in a more technical field.




International Development Advisor or Manager

Advisors or Managers in the area of International Development provide assistance and support to define and deploy international action plans for companies. They analyze a company's global situation and its exporting and importing capacity, draft action plans and define geographical targets and practices.

They must be educated to post-graduate level in business (4 or 5 years of higher education), have followed an international concentration and have an understanding of economics and geopolitics. They have experience in the field in the areas of trade, marketing, finance and law.

They should have a global approach and an understanding of the international political environment. They must also be able to perform analyses, make recommendations appropriate to the company and calculate financial forecasts.


International Relations Officer

International Relations Officers are in charge of a company's international relations and implement and monitor any actions and procedures related to cooperations set up by the company. Most commonly, these positions are held in multinational or transnational firms, higher education establishments, local authorities or international organizations.

Officers need to implement and closely follow a monitoring system, negotiate contracts and conventions with different partners and manage projects from an administrative and financial perspective. They plan and put in place the budget necessary to carry out actions with their own resources or subsidies. Their role is also to promote international considerations in the everyday practices of departments within the organization.

Educated to postgraduate level (5 years of higher education) in international trade, officers must speak perfect English and have practical knowledge of another language. They must have an up-to-date understanding of geopolitical matters, be proficient in the practices of national and international institutions and also know about institutional and financial systems. They must also be able to follow through a project and lead negotiations.

International Research Officer

International Research Officers contribute to planning research (projects, drafting questionnaires, dealing with suppliers, etc.). They manage studies in progress and format results so they can be analyzed and recommendations drawn.

They must be educated to post-graduate level in business (4 or 5 years of higher education), have followed a marketing concentration and have an understanding of quantitative and qualitative studies. They must have practical, hands-on experience in a commercial environment.

They must be rigorous, well organized and able to adapt closely and self examine their own thoughs and actions. An excellent level of written and spoken English is required (international studies).

Lobbyist

Person or organization capable of putting forward or leading actions to influence or counterinfluence others in areas pertaining to business intelligence.

They must be part of a wide network and have an in-depth knowledge of economic and political influence strategies. This is not an entry-level position.

Coming from a business school (5 years of higher education), they must have followed an international concentration related to trade and negotiation and have excellent understanding of the economics, geopolitics and organization of institutions. They should also have monitoring skills.

Public Relations Officer

Public Relations Officers must promote the brand image of the company for which they work. They establish, develop and improve external promotion activities, in accordance with the strategy established by management: they organize advertising campaigns, conferences, product launches, etc. They work with the press (writing and disseminating information, newsletters and press kits and organizing conferences and visits…). They also work with institutions such as government administrations and the national and international financial sectors. They must convince, win over and earn the loyalty of their target audiences (prescribers, governments, suppliers and clients…).

Holding a Bachelors, Masters or MBA from a school of business or political science, they must have a concentration in marketing and knowledge of communications.
